Web Host going Green

A web hosting site called, The Planet announced that it will be conducting a "lights-out program" in their company in order to reduce energy consumption. The company has a yearly energy consumption of about 1.4 million kilowatt and hopes that the program will be able to deliver them an annual cost savings of around $140,000.

The company's data centers are located in Houston and Dallas and they have around 56,000 servers. The company's lights on policyis from 8 am to 5pm, a big cut from their previous 24 hours a day lights on operation. Lights are only turned on by data center technicians only when needed in computer rooms. And in order to decrease the need for overhead lights, the lamps in the main areas of the company are in a constant on state when the main light is turned off.

Hmm, I wonder if other web hosting companies will follow The Planet's initiative to conserve energy. Well, I do hope that the top 10 web hosting companies ranked in webhostinggeeks.com's website will follow though I doubt if any of them are as big as The Planet.
