Italy's Catholics told to hold off on technology use until Easter

Okay, so as if abstaining from meat isn't torture enough for us Catholics, the Roman Catholic Bishops in Italy are asking the faithful for a high-tech fasting for Lent. These include among others: turning off iPods, turning off modern appliances, no web surfing, or no texting until Easter.

Some Dioceses in Modena, as well as Catholic groups, have asked for a ban on text messaging every Friday of Lent. The Lenten Season in the Catholic calendar starts with ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday. The diocese in Modena says that abstaining from text messaging say that it would help Catholics remember the importance of concrete relationships and not virtual ones. The diocese further stated that the action would also remind us that our actions and lifestyles will have consequences in distant countries, particularly, the years of bloodshed in Congo. The bloodshed in Congo is instigated by the power struggle for the coltan mines in the region, coltan, being the primary mineral used in the construction of mobile phones.

I don't know if I have the guts to give up my tech but couldn't I just settle for giving out an all-out Easter celebration? We've been doing Easter parties since I was kid and my family goes all out, even doing the Easter egg hunting thing. In fact, I've been to my parents' house a few days ago and my parents are already thinking of easter table decorations.
